EpiCeram Skin Barrier Emulsion is the only steroid-free, fragrance-free, ceramide-dominant topical formulation approved by Health Canada for the treatment of atopic dermatitis, which provides an innovative alternative to steroid-based products.
It is indicated to treat dry skin conditions and to manage and relieve the burning and itching associated with various types of dermatoses, including atopic dermatitis. EpiCeram Skin Barrier Emulsion helps to relieve dry, waxy skin by maintaining a moist wound and skin environment, which is beneficial to the healing process.
Atopic dermatitis is a chronic skin disease in which the skin goes through cycles of being inflamed and itchy. The main symptoms of atopic dermatitis – inflammation, redness, and pronounced pruritus – are often made worse by a “vicious cycle” that develops when inflamed skin is scratched, making the skin even more inflamed and itchy, which causes patients to scratch more. People with atopic dermatitis have skin that reacts very easily to irritants, such as dust, pet dander, pollen, perfume, and chlorine.
Unlike other so-called “barrier repair” and medical device creams, EpiCeram is a ceramide-dominant, physiologic, lipid-based formulation that provides an optimal ratio of ceramides, cholesterol, and free fatty acids (in 3:1:1 ratio) to correct the barrier abnormality of atopic skin. It is a non-greasy formulation that is well tolerated by patients. EpiCeram can be used both as monotherapy and in combination therapy.
EpiCeram helps in rebuilding the depleted skin barrier by restoring the natural balance of lipids within the outer layer of the skin. It achieves this by providing the skin with an optimally balanced combination of ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids, which are the bricks and mortar (building blocks) of the skin. By replenishing the skin’s physiologic lipids, EpiCeram helps to normalize the skin’s pH and prevent it from drying out.
EpiCeram brings the pH back to normal (pH 5) restoring the skin barrier function. Because of its physiologic lipids and optimal ratio, EpiCeram is able to transverse the stratum corneum; it is taken up by the keratinocytes, packaged into lamellar bodies and re-secreted in order to restore the physiologiclipids and the cohesion within the stratum corneum.
EpiCeram is available in 2 formats:
